In her surrealist oil painting Mother Earth, or Gaia, Clare Rowley paints the Earth as alive, feminine, and sacred. A reclining goddess merges into the landscape. Her body becomes the mountain. Her hair becomes a waterfall. Red vines grow from her skin. Trees rise from her form as if born from within her. Their roots meet the earth at her feet.

A turquoise river runs the valley. Golden hills roll toward a sunset sky. The line between woman and wilderness is gone.
